North West Scotland

During this ten-day tour we will photograph the spectacular landscape and coastal scenery around the far northwest coast of Scotland. Our focus will be the regions of Torridon, Assynt and Sutherland. We will be photographing mountain, moorland, rivers, lochs, waterfalls, stone bridges, castles, lighthouses, patterns in the landscape, trees, forest, sand dunes, estuaries and much more during this workshop! I will demonstrate many of the techniques I use to create dramatic and atmospheric landscape images, as well as how to find compositions within the landscape. At this time of the year, I hope we’ll be blessed with some dramatic light to illuminate the early autumn colours.

We spend three nights based in a beautiful, isolated clifftop lighthouse. The rest of the time we will be using hotel accommodation. There will be eight full days of photography in total.

During the workshop participants will travel in my large four-wheel drive vehicle. On this occasion I won’t be able to offer anyone a lift to Scotland, as I will be running two workshops back-to-back. Our start and finish point will be the Glasgow Airport Premier Inn, where we spend the first and last night of the trip. The hotel is within walking distance from the airport terminal and there is also a good rail link.

PLANNED ITINERARY

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions and availability of accommodation.

• Day one: Arrive in Glasgow late afternoon. Introductions and overnight at Glasgow airport Premier Inn.

• Day two: Breakfast at hotel and then drive up through the west Highlands (stopping for photos en-route) to reach the Torridon area in the late afternoon. Overnight Torridon area.

• Day three: Explore the Torridon area from our base in Kinlochewe.

• Day four: Dawn shoot in Torridon. After breakfast drive further north to reach our spectacular lighthouse accommodation in the late afternoon.

Overnight Assynt area.

• Day five & six: Explore Assynt area from our lighthouse base.

• Day seven: Dawn shoot in Assynt and then drive up to the far north coast to reach our next hotel in the late afternoon. Overnight Sutherland area.

• Day eight: Explore the rugged far north coast of Scotland from our Sutherland base.

• Day nine: Dawn shoot along the north coast before heading south through stunning landscapes to overnight at Glasgow airport Premier Inn.

• Day ten: Depart for home after breakfast.

Please bear in mind that we will be exploring quite a large area to get as much variety as possible, so there will be some quite lengthy travelling times between some locations, not in terms of distance but because we must drive around mountains on small roads to reach different locations at the best time for photography. We will visit locations based on lighting angles and tidal conditions, rather than taking the best route logistically.
