Bulgaria Waterbirds
24th to 28th August 2026 - Available
22nd to 27th August 2027 - Available
During this new workshop we will be working in the far east of Bulgaria close to the Black Sea. Our aim will be to capture a wide variety of water birds and other wildlife in a large private wetland area. This is peak migration time, so there will be large numbers of birds present.
We will be working both from floating hides and land-based hides to provide different shooting angles. The floating hides will require the use of chest waders (which can be supplied if necessary). The hides themselves are very buoyant, but you will still need to be confident walking in water just over waist height. These hides provide a fantastic opportunity to photograph water birds from water level, which is often the best approach.
Many of the hides we use are for one person only, so a guide will not be with you all the time. Therefore, this workshop is not suitable for beginners, and you will need a reasonable level of competency when it comes to operating your camera.
We will endeavour to make use of the best light of the day around dawn and dusk, so be prepared for very early starts and late finishes! We will have a reasonably long rest period in the middle of the day when the light is harsh and bird activity drops. Each full day we will have two 5-6 hour photography sessions.
As a guide here are some of the bird species that we hope to photograph (obviously none of these can be guaranteed): Little Bittern, White Pelican, Dalmatian Pelican, Greater Flamingo, Spotted Crake, Ferruginous duck, Spoonbill, Pygmy cormorant, Squacco heron, along with a variety of raptors, waders, egrets and other wildfowl.
The workshop will begin and end in Burgas.
