Workshops

The spectacular landscape of the Slovenian Alps

Summer Workshop - 29th June to 3rd July 2007
Autumn Workshop – 12th to 16th October 2007

Marko Trebusak and professional photographer Guy Edwardes invite you to discover a spectacular region of Europe where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. We will explore the Julian Alps when the autumn colours are at their height and the beautiful and dramatic Soca Valley when the alpine flower meadows are in full bloom.

Julian AlpsDuring the autumn workshop we will photograph the golden tones of deciduous larch trees against a spectacular mountain backdrop in the north west of the country (with many peaks well above 2000 m high) and also the bright red foliage of the smoke tree in the Kras region of Slovenia. We will also explore rivers, waterfalls and gorges in the Alpine region of north-west Slovenia. This will be an exclusive get together of nature and photography lovers where my knowledge of the region and Guy's photographic expertise will be at hand for you to learn something new.

During the summer workshop we will be based around the Soca Valley, with it's amazing turquoise river flanked by towering peaks. We have timed this trip to coincide with the eruption of colour in the alpine flower meadows. Although this is predominantly a landscape workshop we will also photograph close-ups of the native wild flora and its associated insects.

Krizna jama cavesThe cost of each tour is £495. The price includes transportation from the airport of Ljubljana to the hotel, all transportation during the tour and transport back to Ljubljana airport. It also includes four nights hotel accommodation (in single rooms) with breakfast.

We already have a lot of interest in these workshops so please act fast to reserve your place. Please to e-mail me for further details and a booking form.

Grey Seals on the east coast of England

11th to 13th January 2008

A two-day weekend workshops based around one of the UK’s most dramatic animal spectacles.

Join me to shoot hundreds of grey seals on the isolated sandbanks of the Lincolnshire coast. The workshop is timed to coincide with, not only the best lighting and tidal conditions, but also the period when bull seals fight for the chance to mate. There will also be seal pups present so plenty of activity is assured! I will take you directly to the best location so that we can concentrate on producing spectacular images of all aspects of seal behaviour from fighting, playing and sleeping to suckling pups. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to shoot sanderling and other wading birds.

Grey SealsEach workshop is limited to a group size of 4 participants and places are reserved on a first come first served basis. The all-inclusive price is £295 per person. The workshop package includes guesthouse accommodation and all meals. An illustrated talk and critique session will be held at the guesthouse on the Saturday evening.

Please note that all photographic standards are welcome and you can be assured of individual tuition whenever required. You won’t need to possess the longest focal length lenses in order to make the most of this opportunity – frame filling shots are possible using a wide-angle lens! I must stress that this workshop will involve a hike across wet sand flats to a very exposed location open to the full blast of cold North Sea winds. A decent level of fitness together with clothing appropriate to the time of year and conditions will be necessary. The experience of working in the heart of a colony of some 200-300 grey seals, and the amazing images that you’ll obtain, are sure to make this a truly memorable workshop.

Ireland Seabird Workshop

8th to 11th June 2007 FULL
16th to 19th July 2007 FULL

A weekend workshop photographing seabirds in a spectacular location off the southeast tip of Ireland.

GannetThe workshop is timed to coincide with the breeding season for many species of seabird. The birds will be in peak condition and we can expect to witness a variety of behaviour. We will photograph gannet, puffin, guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, fulmar, shag, lesser black-backed and greater black-backed gull, oystercatcher and possibly chough and peregrine falcon. There is also a good chance of encountering the odd rarity. The seabirds are very approachable as this is not a tourist hotspot like many of the British seabird colonies. Previous visits have provided me with some of my best seabird images. One of the main benefits of this location is the clean surroundings – free from bare earth and guano. Birds can be photographed on grassy slopes and attractive lichen covered rocks.

Due to the fragile environment (puffin and shearwater burrows underfoot) I have to restrict this workshop to a small group of photographers.

The workshop will be held during the extended weekend of 8th - 11th June 2007 (Friday to Monday)and is limited to 8 participants. The cost of the workshop is £395 per person. In addition to photographic tuition this figure will include three nights hotel accommodation (in single en-suite rooms) and all boat fees during the workshop (Irish sea crossing, taxi’s from the port to the hotel, food and drink are not included). I will liaise with all participants in order to make bookings for ferry crossings and taxi’s on the Irish side.

RazorbillI have arranged a local boatman to ferry us to and from our location early and late in the day so that we can make the most of the best light (hopefully!). Due to the long summer days we will make several crossings to the islands beginning with a late afternoon crossing on the Friday when we will be on the island from 5pm until 10.30pm. We will go out again early the following morning 6.30am until 11am, returning to the hotel to rest and review our images, before heading back to the island for another late evening shoot between 5pm and 10.30pm. Monday morning will be another early shoot between 6.30am and 11am. All these boat trips do push the price of the workshop up a little, but previous experience has shown that this is the best way to make the most of the weekend. The midday breaks also allow us to discuss techniques in more depth and to consider what we will try to achieve on our next stint.

I must stress that in order to make the most of this workshop a telephoto lens of at least 300mm will be required. You will also need to be reasonably fit, as the terrain is quite rough in parts. I am experienced with both film and digital capture and will be able to advice on all aspects of photographic technique. We will tackle bird portraits, behaviour and flight shots. There may also be a chance for some evening landscape photography.

I will accept last minute bookings at a reduced rate from those who are only able to stay between Friday and Sunday if there is space available.

Obviously the weather in coastal locations can be unpredictable. In the event that we are unable to get to our location during the weekend I will refund the cost of all boat trips affected on the island side.

For a booking form please to contact me by e-mail or phone 01297 443276.

PHOTOGRAPHY TRIPS

The range of photography trips that I offered last year proved very successful with almost every trip fully booked.

Below is my latest photography trip schedule for 2007/08. These trips run alongside my established photographic workshops.

As usual these photography trips will be based on small group sizes with no more than three participants. Each tour will basically allow other photographers to join me on some of my regular photographic trips around the UK and Europe. Subjects covered will include both landscape and nature, although for this season landscapes are the priority.

I am continuing to keep the cost of these trips as low as possible. You will receive individual tuition as required, although perhaps not quite as in-depth as you would normally expect on one of my main workshops, as I will be working hard at taking photographs as well. For all UK based trips I will be charging each participant a fixed fee of £50 per day and this will include all tuition, guidance and travel costs whilst you are with me. Participants will travel in my vehicle. I will arrange group bookings of accommodation but the cost of accommodation, food and any entrance fees or ferry crossings will not be included. I will be providing Photoshop tutorials and image critiques during each trip. I will teach specific photographic techniques and I would also hope that you will learn from observing the way that I work, especially as I will be able to explain the thought process that goes into making my own images.

My aim last year was to keep departure dates flexible. In theory this allowed me to time trips to coincide with reasonable weather, and in some cases this was indeed the case. However, this time I have decided to leave dates flexible to begin with but as soon as I have enough people interested in each trip I will liase with the participants to set mutually convenient dates. There are a couple of trips which will be weather dependent and I will therefore have to leave the dates for these flexible.

Unfortunately, due to a few people not turning up when they had booked a place last year I am having to ask for a small deposit in order to confirm each booking this time around.

Most trips will run over a weekend (or extended weekend to include Friday and Monday for travelling) and others will last between four and seven days.

2007/08 Photography Trip Schedule:

Cornwall - Autumn/Winter

Landscape photography primarily along the coast. I will be running two trips during the autumn/winter. This will be a short mid-week trip (2 or 3 days). We will be based close to Land's End. We will explore the coves, beaches, lighthouses and fishing villages along both the north and south coasts - hopefully with some crashing waves and colourful sunsets.

Wirral - December

Landscapes, birds and squirrels. We will photograph lighthouses along the coast as well as flocks of wading birds. We will also visit Formby Point to photograph the red squirrels. This is likely to be a weekend trip lasting two or three days.

Winter Landscapes

I am hoping to make the most of any significant snowfall this winter. Exact locations and dates are weather dependent. If you are interested in shooting snow scenes and are able to leave at a moments notice then please register your interest via email. I will not be taking deposits for this trip. Most likely locations will be Snowdonia, Lake District or Scotland.

West Coast of Scotland - December/January

Landscape photography in winter. The exact locations visited will depend upon the weather conditions at the time. If there is snow then we will concentrate on snow scenes in the mountains. If there is no snow we will head up to the north west coast to concentrate on windswept beaches, sunsets and coastal landscapes. This will be a week long trip.

North Norfolk - December/January

Birds and landscapes. This trip is weather dependent. We will need cold weather to guarantee good shots of thousands of wintering birds. We will visit the coast for wading birds and a little further inland for flocks of wildfowl. We will also try to get some landscape images that are characteristic of the area. I will not be taking deposits for this trip - simply register your interest and I will contact you when a suitable weather window occurs. A weekend or extended weekend trip.

South West Ireland - March/April

Landscapes around the south west coast - including the dramatic coastline of the Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry. This will be a 4 to 6 day trip. We will travel via Fishguard/Rosslare.

Northumberland

Coast, Castles and Eider Ducks. We will explore the Northumberland coast photographing Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, St.Mary's Lighthouse and some particularly tame Eider Ducks! Expect to take a lot of images during this extended weekend workshop!

Jersey - April   (FULL)

Landscapes and seascapes. An extended weekend trip.

The Yorkshire Dales - May

Landscapes and waterfalls. An extended weekend trip 3 to 5 days. We will photograph landscapes, waterfalls, castles and wildflowers. This trip is timed to coincide with the fresh green foliage appearing on the trees and bountiful wildflowers in the hay meadows.

Northern Ireland - May

Coastal landscapes. A 4 to 6 day trip via Holyhead. Mid summer is the best time to photograph this north facing coast as the sun rises and sets at it's northernmost position - hopefully resulting in some colourful sunrises and sunsets.

If you would like more information about any of these trips please don't hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to register interest in any trip just drop me an email - once I have enough people interested in each trip I will get in touch to discuss dates. Once dates have been agreed I will send out a booking form. Bookings will be confirmed as soon as the deposit has been received.

I am always open to ideas for new photography trips. If you have a particular location or wildlife subject that you would like to photograph please let me know and I will do my best to work it into my schedule next year.
